Montréal Vide
Au terme d'un projet de recherche-création sur les lieux vacants, le Bureau des Zones Grises de l’Office des Règles et des Normes a produit Un Film sur le vide et un Thésaurus du Non-lieu complémentaire. Les résultats de cette recherche ont été présentés à 4th Space sous la forme d’une installation regroupant un film (inachevé), des vidéos d'entrevues, des boucles vidéos de lieux abandonnés projetées en grand avec leurs paysages sonores, et un thesaurus interactif sur un écran tactile. Au cours des deux jours d’ouverture au public, des présentations, des ateliers et des visites de l’exposition ont été organisées.
Le film lui-même était notre prétexte et notre stratégie pour accéder aux espaces vacants et aux contributions de divers artistes, penseurs et militants sociaux. Cependant, à la lueur du matériel recueilli et du sujet de nature spatiale, nous souhaitons maintenant revisiter ce format pour en faire une installation et transformer ce travail en une œuvre immersive qui pourrait être présentée dans plusieurs lieux.
Following a research-creation project on vacant spaces, the Grey Areas Desk of the Office of Rules and Norms produced A Film about Emptiness and a complementary Thesaurus of No-Place. The results of this research were presented at 4th Space in the form of an installation featuring an (unfinished) film, interview videos, large-scale video loops of abandoned sites projected alongside their soundscapes, and an interactive thesaurus on a touchscreen. During the two days the exhibition was open to the public, presentations, workshops, and guided tours were organized.
The film itself served as a pretext and strategy for accessing vacant spaces and contributions from various artists, thinkers, and social activists. However, in light of the material collected and the spatial nature of the subject, we now wish to revisit this format to create an installation and transform this work into an immersive piece that could be presented in multiple venues.
The Office of Rules and Norms (ORN) is an arts-based transdisciplinary collective that engages with regulations, the rule of law and cultural norms. These engagements reveal, comprehend, play with, subvert, and transcend current ways of understanding and acting in relation to regulatory forces in order to make room for more equitable alternatives. In its attempts to query legal and behavioral urban infrastructures, the ORN specifically deploys art and design practice, culture, and methods along three axes:
Art as Subversion | Intervening in grey areas of regulation
Art as Pedagogy | Making public various forces and forms of influence
Art as Decision-Making | Reorienting modes of knowing and deliberating
